Bruce Power today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Framatome valued at $18.7 million covering a range of innovations and new activities, including operational improvements for its nuclear reactors. These innovative modernizations, planned for Bruce A and Bruce B, are an important component of the facility’s Life-Extension Program, which will allow the plant to continue operating through 2064.

L3 MAPPS announced today that it has won a contract from ENGIE Electrabel to upgrade the Tihange Unit 1 full scope operator training simulator. The original simulator, developed by L3 MAPPS in cooperation with Tractebel ENGIE, was declared Ready For Training on March 4, 2016. The expansion project involves several modifications, and the upgraded simulator is expected to be in service in the second quarter of 2019.

L3 MAPPS Wins Digital Control Computer System Hardware Replacement for Bruce Unit 2
MONTREAL, February 13, 2018 – L3 MAPPS announced today that it has won a contract from Bruce Power to deliver three Digital Control Computers (DCCs), replacing the existing Bruce A Unit 2 system with all-new hardware. The first unit (DCC-Z) will be used as a maintenance platform and is due to be installed in the fall of 2019. The other two DCCs (DCC-X and DCC-Y) are redundant units for plant operations and are expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2020.

SNC-Lavalin was awarded $38 million worth of contracts from Bruce Power from July to the end of December in 2017 to support its operational objectives. The work awarded was won under a Master Services Agreement signed by the two companies in 2016 and is in addition to $28 million and $45 million of work announced respectively in February and August of last year.

Urenco, Bruce Power Sign MOU To Develop U-Battery for Canada
Urenco, Bruce Power and AMEC NSS Limited recently announced that they had signed an MOU to cooperate in the design, licensing and development of Urenco’s U-Battery micro nuclear system for the Canadian electricity and heat market. The U-Battery contains a 10 MWth nuclear heat source that can be configured to produce either 4 MWe plus useful heat in a cogeneration mode or process heat at a delivery temperature of 750 C. Under the MOU, the three companies will conduct a feasibility study for the potential deployment of micro nuclear reactors across Canada, including Bruce Power as the owner and/or operator of a fleet of U-Battery units. They will also investigate the suitability of a Bruce Power site for the deployment of a U-Battery demonstration reactor.
