Bruce Power supplier ATS expanding Cambridge facility

Today, Bruce Power was on hand as ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. held a groundbreaking ceremony at the location of its Cambridge, Ontario, campus for its 43,000 square foot facility expansion, which will be used to house the Major Component Replacement (MCR) Integration Facility.

Bruce Power and ATS have a multi-year master tooling agreement for the supply of automated tooling systems and related services. The facility will be ready for tool testing in March 2018 in advance of the first Major Component Replacement at Bruce Power, which begins in January 2020.

“Our partnership with ATS will help us deliver our Life-Extension Program on time and on budget,” said Mike Rencheck, President and CEO, Bruce Power. “The new facility is all about certainty and making sure the tools will be ready to do the job for which they’re designed. I applaud ATS for its commitment to our project and its expansion in Ontario.”

The facility will represent identical geometries and interfaces to the actual Bruce Power reactor vault so that potential flaws and bugs can be detected before the tools are put to use.

“The [MCR] project will involve a significant amount of equipment and tooling to be transported into and out of the vault and interface with other tools, existing reactor vault structures and system components, said Eric Kiisel, Senior Vice President, Energy & Consumer at ATS. “The facility will enable ATS to serve Bruce Power with comprehensive integration & testing of tools and processes in an environment that simulates the vault conditions significantly reducing the risk of issues and costly delays at the time of actual installation.”

The MCR Integration Facility will be used for the pre-outage testing, verification and optimization of the removal, inspection and installation tools. This facility will ensure the tools are operating correctly in a full-scale simulation environment, where production time, budgets and vault transitions can be verified and optimized greatly reducing project risk.

Marwan Tabbara, MP for Kitchener South-Hespeler, also joined Rencheck and Andrew Hider, ATS CEO, for the groundbreaking ceremony.

“I’m very pleased that part of Bruce Power’s anticipated $13 billion investment in its Major Component Replacement Program will mean increased employment in my riding of Kitchener South-Hespeler,” MP Tabbara said. “I welcome the many jobs for tradespeople who will be employed to build the 43,000 square-foot tool testing facility on the current ATS campus, and the many engineers and other skilled people who will be employed in the facility’s operation. Waterloo Region’s skilled and educated people are our greatest resource.”

The Hon. Kathryn McGarry, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry and MPP for Cambridge, said her riding is home to a growing advanced manufacturing sector and ATS is one of one of its most dynamic companies.

“With the expansion announced today, ATS will continue to be an industry leader and help contribute to the refurbishment of the Bruce nuclear plant and our province’s modern energy system,” Minister McGarry said.

Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program will ensure Bruce Power nuclear continues to provide low-cost, clean and reliable electricity through 2064. The operation of the Bruce site through 2064 will create and sustain 22,000 direct and indirect jobs annually, while creating $4 billion in annual Ontario economic benefit through the direct and indirect spending on operational equipment, supplies, materials and labour income.
