ASI Group Ltd.
1

ASI Group Ltd. (ASI) was founded in 1987 as Aquatic Sciences Inc. by a team of industry professionals committed to providing integrated engineering, marine and ecological services to local clients. Over the past 25 years of business operations, ASI has expanded equipment and personnel resources to establish working relationships with many global clients.

ASI pioneered the design and use of remotely operated vehicles (ROV) with extended umbilical lengths for the inspection and survey of intake and outfall pipelines, large diameter tunnels, and other water conveyance structures and facilities worldwide. Due to the infestation of intake pipelines by zebra mussels in the Great Lakes watershed, it was necessary to complement our commercial diving services with the supply and operation of ROV’s in order to address site specific safety and operational obstacles such as extended penetration distance, confined spaces, limited shutdown duration, and general hazards associated with unknown site conditions.

ASI’s first ROV was the Pipeliner (1990) which utilized a 3,000 foot length of umbilical, and thus could undertake inspections of 6,000 feet (or more) in length depending on location and number of access portals. The next purpose-built ROV was the ASI Mantaro with a 10 km length of umbilical, which still remains as the single longest tether for any ROV in the world.

Currently, ASI owns and operates a diverse fleet of ROV’s which are utilized to service a wide range of industries including hydroelectric, water control/containment, mining, nuclear, manufacturing, oil and gas to name a few. The fleet includes the ASI Mantaro, as well as the ASI Falcon and ASI LBV300XL, each of which has 5 and 2.5 km umbilicals respectively. Additionally, we have commissioned the building of the next generation ROV, the ASI Mohican, which with its technological advances will provide significant advantages for future inspections.

Since 1989, ASI has successfully completed over 350 tunnel and pipeline inspections for a cumulative total length in excess of 1100 km using a variety of purpose built ROV’s. ASI holds current world records (Guinness World Book of Records) for any single penetration into a flooded tunnel (10 km), and the overall longest inspection of a flooded tunnel (120 km).

ASI has been involved in a variety of projects worldwide including Europe, South America, Latin America, New Zealand, throughout Canada and the United States.

Two significant tunnel inspections were completed during the 1990’s. ASI commissioned the design and construction of the ASI Mantaro vehicle for a project in Peru that required the inspection of a 20 km long head race tunnel to investigate the possible cause of unexplained head loss in the system. Later, in 1998, ASI used their ASI Mantaro ROV to undertake a complete survey of the 120 km Päijänne Tunnel, located in Finland, which included 4 separate deployments of the full 10 km umbilical. The ASI Mantaro stands alone as the world’s only ROV capable of traveling 10 km distances from a single access point.

Our experience with flooded tunnels, optimized equipment and inspection protocols, as well as our ability to manage logistics for remote work locations, allow us to undertake and complete project goals efficiently. With our underwater robotic facilities, fabrication shops and experienced personnel, we assure clients of consistent quality and rapid response. Additionally, in recent years ASI has developed or been involved with supporting technologies including the construction/operation of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) deployed for the inspection of flooded tunnels, the use of multi-beam and dual axis sonar which can be an add-on technology suite to any of ASI’s vehicles. Laser scanning equipment and ground penetrating radar (GPR) are also being developed for future use.
Providing exceptional service to our clients requires the implementation of an effective quality management system. This ensures conformance to client requirements and a system for continuous improvement.

Unlike many of our competitors, ASI Group is registered to ISO 9001:2008, and has been audited to the requirements of CSA Standard CAN3-Z299.3-85: Quality Assurance Program by OPG. Through our corporate Quality Management System, we follow the requirements of CSA Standards CAN3-N286.1, CAN3-N286.2 for design for nuclear power generators and provide highly qualified Professional Engineers and Technologists.

We are a full-service engineering and technology based company with a focus on all aspects of underwater infrastructure inspections, maintenance, and repair; as well as the design, build and operation of water and wastewater treatment facilities.
The head office is situated in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada with additional regional branches located in Sarnia, Ottawa and Haliburton. We also operate an office identified as Aquatic Sciences L.P. in Orchard Park, New York, USA.

ASI Group is comprised of an exceptional blend of water and wastewater engineering, construction management and marine operations personnel. Presently, our team consists of over 100 experts including Professional Engineers, Certified Engineering Technologists, Environmental and Engineering Technicians, Water Quality Analysts, Licensed Commercial Divers, Surveyors and Hydrography specialists.

Throughout the past 25 years in business, our strongest asset has been the ability to offer a full service approach - from initial problem identification to the development and implementation of the appropriate solution.

BC Instruments is a precision machine shop that provides high quality, CNC machining and manufacturing services to clients in the nuclear, aerospace, medical, electronic, oil & gas and injection molding industries.

Established in 1971, BC Instruments (BCI) is a privately owned Canadian Company with plants located 45 minutes north of Toronto, in Schomberg, and Orillia, Ontario. Presently, we employ 130 employees in manufacturing facilities totaling 58,000sq.ft. Annual sales for fiscal 2012 totaled $24 million.

Utilizing modern state of the art CNC equipment, our skilled employees specialize in the manufacture of components and assemblies requiring tolerances as close as 25 microns. We also have the capability and experience to work with customers through the research and development stage of new projects. We make use of a number of machines that utilize high speed spindles, high pressure coolant and constant chip evacuation to machine components at high metal removal rates. We have in-house capacity to machine parts requiring hard milling / turning, honing, laser engraving, single and dual face lapping.

In addition to conventional materials, we are experienced in working with such exotic materials as Hy-Mu 80, Titanium, Inconel 718, A-286, Monel, Haynes Alloy 41 (Rene 41), Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) and various grades of ceramic.

Of special note is our Engineered Materials Machining Section’s (EMMS) use of Ultrasonic Technology to machine near diamond hardness materials such as alumina & zirconia oxides, glass, silicon nitrate, carbide and even man made ruby. The DMS 35 Ultrasonic machine built by Sauer in Germany makes efficient machining of advanced materials possible. With the aid of an ultrasonic spindle, the vibration of the high-tech spindle is transferred to a hollow diamond tool. The tool vibrates at a rate of 20,000 cycles per second, and thus removes miniscule particles from the surface of the work piece. EMMS operates out of a 4,000 square foot facility in Barrie.

We have the ability to translate most known formats of CAD data, including Step AP203/AP214, DXF and IGES for manufacturing customer parts. In addition we can support many native formats such as Catia V5, Pro Engineer and Solid Edge.

BCI is associated with Aerospace Metal Finishing (AMF), located next door to BCI, which provides surface finishing services such as anodizing, electroplating, prime and topcoat. Staveley Services Canada Inc. is stationed on site at AMF to provide non-destructive inspection services such as magnetic particle and fluorescent penetrant inspection.

Cummins Inc., a global power leader, is a corporation of complementary business units that design, manufacture, distribute and service engines and related technologies, including fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions and electrical power generation systems. All Cummins products are verified by either the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or the California Air Resources Board (CARB). As a serious corporate citizen and the world's largest and most experienced provider of diesel emissions products, helping to clean up the environment is clearly the right thing to do.

Cummins engines are designed to provide customers with the highest levels of performance, durability and dependability at the lowest cost of operation. At the same time, we are committed to meeting or exceeding clean air standards.

Cummins has long been a pioneer in emissions research and development, investing in critical technologies in order to achieve future emissions standards while meeting the needs of the customer.

The emissions solutions we use today are the direct result of a technology plan that was set into motion in the early 1990s, a plan that will carry us through 2015 and beyond.

At the core of this road map was a strategic decision not to limit ourselves to any one approach, but to develop the right technology for each application and market served.

Different operating conditions and economic factors can and will influence the technology path most appropriate for each market.

While developing multiple emissions solutions requires a broader and deeper investment in Research and Development on our part, it guarantees the Cummins customer that our engines will deliver optimum performance and fuel economy and reliability at the lowest possible cost of operation

Diakont designs and manufactures radiation tolerant cameras and robotics solutions that support inspection and repairs of nuclear power plants. Diakont’s D40 Camera System is utilized by nuclear power plants in Canada and North America to facilitate in vessel visual inspection (IVVI) and meet visual testing 1 (VT1) standards. Diakont is also a leading provider of buried pipe inspection services using advanced robotic crawlers that travel through the inside if the piping systems. Using this in-line inspection (ILI) technology, Diakont is able to inspect piping systems that are buried beneath buildings, concrete, or roads without requiring extensive excavation. Diakont utilized this robotic ILI technology to inspect the high pressure coolant injection line (HPCI) for the Cooper Nuclear Station in North America. The robotic crawler was equipped with ultrasonic testing (UT) sensors to provide high accuracy data on the remaining pipe wall for the HPCI line. Through the pipe testing, the Cooper Nuclear Station was able to verify the pipeline integrity and was able to avoid a blind replacement of the piping system.

SarPoint Engineering Ltd.
1

SarPoint Engineering specializes in 3D laser scanning for a wide range of applications, including as-built surveying, architecture and cultural heritage documentation, topography and mining, monitoring and civil engineering, and transportation. SarPoint is recognized as a pioneer in the successful application of this technology in Canada’s resource and infrastructure industries.

  • As-Built and Design: When it comes to refitting oil and gas plants and other facilities, no other company can help engineers achieve better results than SarPoint Engineering.
  • Architecture and Cultural Heritage Documentation: We understand that details count when delivering development plans for historic sites that must meet strict government guidelines. Laser scanning delivers detailed façade and internal renderings of historical buildings with unmatched precision, determining elevation changes and shifts in floor levels.
  • Civil Engineering and Monitoring: Laser scanning captures all aspects of the existing infrastructure, including power lines, signage, landscape, curb and gutter, lane locations, median locations and overhead crossings - giving engineers the necessary information to plan new development or transportation corridors.
  • Topography and Mining: Our long-range laser scanners can capture detailed data from large, open areas, as well as above- and below-surface mining operations. This means improved site safety, and eliminates the need to disrupt operations during scanning. We use medium-range scanning to survey below-surface mining operations, generating the data necessary to ensure operational safety and maximize cost efficiency.

As well as our fleet of terrestrial laser scanners SarPoint also operates a unique engineering-grade mobile mapping system which allows the collection of high-density, high-accuracy 3D point data, along with accurately georeferenced digital photography. Laser-based point cloud data is collected while moving by a module installed on top of a truck. Four specially-calibrated cameras mounted on the module capture photography at specified intervals which allows for point colorization and asset identification.

This mobile collection ability is a key advantage that allows topography and asset information to be collected rapidly, and safely, without requiring road closures or interfering with the normal flow of traffic. Data is collected up to 100 meters on either side of the vehicle and is typically accurate to approximately 2 cm, which is equivalent to that of conventional, manual topographic surveys. In addition, unlike conventional surveys, data collected is extremely dense, usually comprising of one point collected every 1-3 cm. This allows for exceptionally detailed 3D point clouds to be created, as shown below.

Unlike GIS-grade mobile mapping systems, which provide data accurate to approximately 10 cm, point clouds provided by SarPoint are rigorously QA/QC’d through control ties made in the field to ensure they meet survey-grade requirements,

SarPoint currently has offices in Alberta, BC & Southern Ontario.

Terrestrial Energy

Terrestrial Energy is developing a next-generation nuclear reactor based on its Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) technology.  The IMSR represents true innovation in cost and functionality.  It will offer reliable power solutions for electricity production, both on- and off-grid, and also energy for industrial process heat generation.  Together, the IMSR energy and heat capabilities have the potential to significantly extend the applicability of nuclear energy far beyond its current footprint.   With this profile, the IMSR is capable of driving the rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad front.  Additionally, the IMSR is complementary to renewable power sources and is ideal for distributed power systems on existing grids.   Using an innovative design and proven Molten Salt Reactor technology, the IMSR can be deployed to global markets in the next decade.  Terrestrial Energy is currently developing its IMSR commercial demonstration power plant for deployment in Canada as the first step toward broader adoption of the IMSR technology in North America and beyond.
